Productivity is Key
Productivity is not about quantity of tasks completed. It’s about both quality and choice—how to engage deeply in projects that matter rather than getting distracted by lots of less important, smaller tasks. You do this by managing your decisions, attention, and energy levels.
A recent study found that 40 percent of the average working professional’s time, attention, and energy goes to unimportant or irrelevant activities. That’s almost half of their time! What if your toilet only worked well half the time? Or your electricity? Or your phone? These types of challenges are frustrating and ineffective. So, when it comes to your personal resources, appreciate their ability to function well and put them to good use!
Let’s Get Wild
Today you are going to practice setting Wildly Important Goals® or WIGs®. A WIG is a goal that takes priority over other ambitions. It is possible to have WIGs in several areas of your life, and it is possible that they overlap. You are the one who decides how much you accomplish when striving for your WIG.
Consider the things you would like to do to be a better student, parent, partner, colleague, boss, etc.. Also think about the things you would like to accomplish in life.
In the chart below, write a goal for each category. Each box should include a different goal.
Setting Stellar Goals
If your priorities—and therefore your time—are so dependent on goals, then knowing how to set them is very important. At first, that may seem easy, but setting goals that allow you to spend your time on what is most important will take effort. First, you will need to limit the number of goals you work on at one time. Second, you will need to determine the best way to measure your progress.
What do you struggle with when trying to achieve your goals?
